We all have ambitions in life, whether we think we do or not. Everyone has
goals they aspire to achieve and many of us know what we want to become when we
"grow up". Ever wished you could be an actress, walk the red carpet like all
the famous Hollywood stars or act in a movie alongside your favorite actor or
actress? I know I have. Brittany Oman is definitely on her way towards the
stars. She is funny, positive and ambitious which has me predicting she will
definitely go far. Lucky for me, I got an interview with her!
As a young girl, Brittany Oman knew there was something inside her that loved
making people laugh and loved having people watch her on stage. She always
loved being the center of attention and adored "performing" for anyone.
"I would write plays and put them on for my parents when I was like 8 years
old. I would do mini school plays, the first one when I was only six years
old." She says. Her ambitions to become an actress were, however, not
completely clear to her until a few years later when she saw the musical
Cats. She recalls, "[it was then] I knew I wanted to act FOREVER!"
People are often inspired by someone or something, which triggers them to
pursue a certain career or dream. When asked what inspired her to pursue her
dreams of becoming an actress Brittany answered; "Theatre is my primary
inspiration. From listening to the soundtrack to Les Miserables since I was
4 years old, to being in theatre in middle and high school, to my theatre
teachers, to my parents, to my friends, to musicals like, 'You’re a Good Man
Charlie Brown' and 'Cats' to movie and TV actors like Larry David and Sandra
Bullock." Other inspirations come from her favorite actors and actresses, her
best-loved include Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts, Tim Allen, Jack Black and
Lilly Tomlin, all of which she would love to work with. She would also love to
work with Larry David, Shia LaBeouf or Peter Jackson one day.
In order to learn more about the acting industry and to study the subject on a serious
level, Brittany decided to get a college education in acting. This decision
primarily came from an agreement with her father, "I told my Dad I didn’t want
to go to college, I just wanted to move to New York City and BECOME an actor.
He said no, I had to go to college. So we compromised, I said I would only go
to college, if I could study acting while I was there - agreed." She explains.
However, choosing what college she wanted to attend took some research.
Brittany asked her "theatre friends" and turned to her subscription of
Dramatics magazine, which includes extensive information on the best
schools for acting in the country. After researching various schools Brittany
finally chose Syracuse University and is now attending her fun and exciting
second year.
Brittany knows she wants to do acting in just about everything, TV, movies and
theatre, although TV acting is her dream. She would like to get a spot o a
successful sitcom or a series on HBO like Sex and the City or Curb Your
Enthusiasm. She has already been in a couple commercials in Jakarta, Indonesia,
however they were only aired nationally in Indonesia. While studying at
Syracuse University she has acted in some student films, she particularly
mentions a student film titled "Below the Rim"
When asked what she would do if she wasn't an actress, Brittany replies
"I would love to write children's books or any books really, or be a news
broadcaster of some kind. At school I also study communications, so I have a
strong interest in that." Friends and family to Brittany have, mostly, reacted
positively to Brittany's dream of becoming an actress. "Some of my family
thinks I'm crazy, but they're still mostly supportive of my decision because
they 'see some talent in me'." She says. Friends are completely supportive of
Brittany, regardless of whether they are acting students like Brittany or not,
they cannot wait to see her in movies one day!
Brittany says the hardest part about becoming and being an actress is the
pressure on you to succeed and become famous. "It’s hard to keep focused when
everyone around you is telling you that you might never get there. It's also
hard to ignore all the stereotypes about how an actor should look, especially
in Hollywood. It’s an emotionally draining profession, where most of the time
you feel like you're never good enough." She explains. When asked where she
sees herself in 5 to 10 years, Brittany says she hopes she is living in
California making the big bucks and successfully making her way through the
business.
Clearly acting is not all about glamour and red carpets, which some might
think. If you want to make a career out of your acting dreams, you have to
be serious about what you want. It is important that you get an education and
stay true to yourself even though you feel pressured to change yourself to suit
the stereotypical "Hollywood looks". Brittany Oman is an actress and hopefully
on her way towards becoming the next big thing! Who knows? Fashtastic may have
been the first to introduce you to the next Sandra Bullock or Julia Roberts!
